Hand-thrown in his Conderton workshop, this salt-glazed stoneware plate by Toff Milway features two fish in gentle counter-movement, carved and slip-trailed in deep indigo on natural clay. Delicate sgraffito flowers, bubbles and currents animate the ground, while a softly raised rim frames the composition and catches the glaze’s quiet sheen.

Equally suited to serving or display, it embodies Toff’s belief that pottery should be both beautiful and useful - alive with the character of the kiln.

Maker Bio

Toff Milway has been creating functional salt-glazed pottery since 1968, inspired by the food his pots are made to hold. Working from his Cotswold studio in Conderton, he uses time-honoured techniques such as dipping, pouring, trailing slips, and sgraffito decoration to craft pieces that are both timeless and practical.

Each pot reflects his belief that the firing process itself brings a unique vitality - no two pieces are ever identical. Toff’s work embodies the Arts & Crafts ideal of beauty in utility: pottery made to be used, cherished, and handed down.
